ADVANCED
Kyusu (急須) teapots are traditional Japanese teapots used for green tea. They are delicate and intricate and have small details that can be hard to master without proper guidance. In this immersive two-day workshop, participants will learn about the origins of Kyusu and tea culture in Japan, how we serve tea, and, of course, how to make a teapot.
This workshop will be run by Ido Ferber, an Israeli-born potter and woodworker. For the past four years, Ido has been studying, and working in Japan. He holds a master's degree from the ceramic craft department from the Tokyo University of the Arts. In the past six months, he has been a visiting apprentice at the Yuushin Gamma in Mashiko under the mentorship of Ken Matsuzaki. He has immersed himself in the Japanese craft tradition and will generously share his skills and knowledge of Japanese techniques and aesthetics during the workshop.
Day 1: Throwing the Components
The workshop kicks off with an in-depth exploration of the basic elements that define Kyusu. From its distinctive shape to its cultural significance and practical use in serving green tea, you will gain a profound understanding of this traditional vessel. Following this, you'll witness a demonstration by Ido on the precise art of throwing each component—body, lid, spout, and handle. You will then throw components under personalised guidance, to make your own teapot.
Day 2: Mesh Making, Assembling, and Finishing Touches
On the second day, we will deepen understanding of the structure by trimming and assembling all the components made on the Day 1. A crucial element in the traditional Japanese teapot is the ceramic mesh that filters fine tea leaves. This mesh is delicately hand-formed and fitted between the body using special tools. We will also cover additional finishing touches before allowing the teapots to dry.
Join us on this enriching journey to not only make a Kyusu teapot but also appreciate the world of Japanese tea culture and the timeless craftsmanship behind this cherished tradition.
